Bury 1 Huddersfield Town 1
Reported by Eric Wood at Gigg Lane
Phil Marsh struck a second half volley, his third goal in three games, and probably increased his chances of a contract whilst other trialists Mike Jones and Danny Racchi also impressed.
It was the Shakers who had the first chance of this opening match at Gigg after 5 minutes when Richie Baker crossed the ball into the penalty area from the left hand side. Andy Bishop managed to force the ball towards goal, but it went just wide of Ryan Cresswell's left hand post. On 15 minutes Bury were back on the attack again when Andy Bishop went for goal from the edge of the penalty area which forced a quick intervention from the Huddersfield defence. On 17 minutes the home side were rewarded a free kick on the edge of the penalty area. Brian Barry-Murphy took his chance and fired it straight at goal, but the ball smashed into the Huddersfield wall.
The home side had another good chance to take the lead on 32 minutes when Andy Bishop played the ball to the edge of the six yard box for Danny Racchi whose close range effort was deflected wide and out of play by the Huddersfield defence.
Halftime: Bury 0-0 Huddersfield
Bury started the second half flying and had two chances in quick succession to take the lead. On 53 minutes Richie Baker fired a good shot at goal from the edge of the penalty area which went just inches wide of the right hand upright. Just a few minutes later the Shakers had their best chance of the game so far when Glynn Hurst's flying header across the face of goal forced substitute keeper Paul Gerrard to make a superb save.
The away side had their first chance of the game on 60 minutes when Malvin Kamara fired a powerful shot from the edge of the six yard box which forced a quick reaction save from keeper Wayne Brown. Just a few minutes later Bury were back on the attack when Danny Racchi made a superb solo effort running through the defence into the penalty area. Unfortunately his effort lacked accuracy as his shot swerved over the crossbar. The Shakers finally took the lead on 72 minutes when Paul Gerrard failed to collect the ball from a cross leaving the net open for Phil Marsh who had no difficulty firing the ball into the top right hand corner of the goal to give Bury the lead.
