Bury: If ever there was a good time to play Chesterfield, perhaps this is it with the Spireites having one or two injury problems ahead of Friday nights game. For Bury though, its exactly the opposite. Only Aaron Grundy is on the treatment table after coming through surgery on a chipped bone in his ankle.

Following Saturdays home defeat against Brentford, there was a definite case of feeling sorry for ourselves, until Colin Woodthorpe gave us his thoughtful opinions on the game and recent events. Should the management need any motivation ahead of this important game, then perhaps the squad should be given Woody's comments before the game.

Yes it was a bad referee, yes we all know that certain decisions went against us - but the fact is that we had ten shots on target and only put one of them away. The law of averages doesn't even come into affect on that one. Its quite simple, take your chances or you will come away with a a defeat - which is exactly what happened on Saturday. Don't expect many changes to the side that lost the game at Gigg Lane on Saturday, we'd even be as bold to say its more than likely to be the same again. Any side that has ten chances on target can't surely have a bad day at the office twice!

The side looks solid at the back, fluid through the field and chances are being created. Nicky Adams has turned out to be the surprise package of the season so far with his performances. He is causing problems for defenders and there is no doubt he will do it again tonight.

Chesterfield manager, a former Bury player that made five appearances for the Shakers whilst on loan at Gigg Lane, has identified a Bury side containing experience, pace, strength and a threat. Glynn Hurst will return to Saltergate for the first time since leaving to join Notts County, some of the local will welcome Hursty back with open arms whilst some may sling a little abuse after he left to join another club. Former players that leave Gigg Lane, and then return usually let us know about it - as we saw with Ricky Shakes last weekend, hopefully Hursty can do the same at Saltergate tonight and grab his first goal of the season.

Another Gigg Lane connection at Chesterfield is Alan Knill, the giant defender signed for Bury in 1989 and made more appearances' for Bury than any of his other clubs. A popular figure, Knilly will get a good reception from the travelling Bury supporters.

Chris Casper is expecting a performance, but most of all, you get the feeling that the result is high on his list of expectations as well. Bury's excellent away form gets another stiff test against a Spireites side that is looking to bounce back up to League One.

Chesterfield: Chesterfield FC manager Lee Richardson has hit out at the rules governing the Johnson's Paint Trophy after two key men received injuries in the Hartlepool game and look doubtful for tomorrow evening's League Two showdown against Bury. It is stipulated that six players in the starting line must have played in the majority of games since the start of the season.

The regulation forced Richardson to field Phil Picken - who was already carrying a slight knock - and Jamie Winter, both of whom he would have liked to have rested. Picken had to come off with an ankle problem in the first half while Winter also received a whack and was replaced during the second half.

''I'm not happy that men in suits who know nothing about individual situations at clubs dictate who you pick for your team. The competition is a farce and I cannot understand the logic behind it. 'We have three games in six days and that is a big ask for any player. It is not right that we should be dictated to over which players to pick. Managers should be left to decide,'' said Richardson.

The Blues boss was keen to stress that his comments has nothing to do with the result of the Hartlepool match and that he would have felt the same even if his side had gone through to the second round. In the same competition last year Chesterfield beat Oldham away but were punishd for fielding an understrength side and were subject to a £1,500 suspended fine.

In addition to the doubts over Picken and Winter, the Blues will be without skipper Aaron Downes and on-loan striker Adam Rooney for the Bury match. Downes is off to play with the Australian U23s and missed the Hartlepool game while Rooney is on duty with the Republic of Ireland U21s. Before the transfer closed last week, Richardson brought in Dublin-born Rooney (19) from Stoke City for a four-month spell.

Rooney has blistering pace and is Stoke's youngest-ever hat-trick scorer. He has represented Ireland's U19s, for whom he has netted a hat-trick, and the U21s. Also signed on a non-contract basis for a month was veteran French defender George Santos. Santos (37) has played for Tranmere, West Brom, Sheffield Unitd, Grimsby, Ipswich, Brighton and Oxford. Santos, a Cape Verdi Islands international, has been training with the Spireites for a fortnight.

As this is Mr Ward's first season as a league referee, this game will be the first time he has taken charge of a Bury game, though he has officiated a Chesterfield game in the FA Cup last season, when non league Basingstoke dumped the Spireites out in the first round with a 1-0 win at Saltergate.

Last Meeting: A 2-0 defeat on 09 February 2002. Two goals from Chesterfield's Jamie Burt did the damage to the Shakers, Bury did get the ball in the back of the net through Michael Nelson, with the score at 1-0 to the home side and seconds to play, the officials disallowed the goal and Chesterfield went on to score another goal in injury time.
